THE HYDE PARK MASTODON

The centerpiece of the prehistoric gallery of the museum will be the Hyde Park mastodon. Recently featured on the Discovery Channel, it is the most complete mastodon ever found. The only cast of this magnificent creature will be mounted in the center of the gallery surrounded by a setting depicting life 11,500 years ago.

Proprietary educational displays reminiscent of that era will tell the story of their dramatic birth, life and death, and pose the unanswered question "why did they become extinct"? The museum guides will offer a narrative in addition to referring guests to the mural, lighted displays and audio track that will be created specifically for this special exhibit. Additional information will be available in the brochure, on the computer terminals and on the web site.

A special series of presentations will take place, including a screening of the Discovery Channel program entitled "The Ultimate Guide: Mastodon In Your Back yard", on the large screen plasma displays in the "Jurassic Theatre". As groups emerge from the film, large-scale murals and captioned museum displays will depict life as it was in the Pleistocene Era.

As soon as this gallery is complete we will have a "name the mastodon" contest. School children will be eligible for prizes for the top 10 finalists for the best essay describing the events in the life of this ancient lifeform. Animatronic dinosaur displays will eventually bring the entire experience more to life.

As families continue to navigate though the museum they will encounter, and interact with, robots, a simulated flying saucer, the bridge of a starship, large plasma displays, the Time Machine, the latest in high-technology and so much more.
